Why National Bike Month Matters — Especially in Georgia

Brookhaven Bike Rodeo

May is National Bike Month, and biking is growing in popularity across Georgia. We all want to be the best state in the South for cycling, and that’s precisely why this month matters.

Bicycling offers enormous benefits for our health, streets, and communities. It’s an enjoyable and accessible way to boost physical fitness, improve mental well-being, and reduce stress. But beyond personal health, riding a bike connects us: it brings neighbors together, supports local businesses, and allows us to experience our communities in a more personal, human way than driving.

Most importantly, National Bike Month is a time to raise awareness. When more Georgians get on bikes, it sends a clear message to local leaders and policymakers that we need safer streets for everyone, whether people are walking, biking, driving, or using transit. Every ride is an act of advocacy, showing that the people of Georgia want safer and more connected communities.

So even if the road isn’t always smooth, let’s keep pedaling. Together, we can help shape a future where biking, walking, and rolling in Georgia is safe for everyone. Take a look at the key dates and events happening around the state below. Check and see if your local cycling club or community has events going on so you can join in the fun! No events happening near you? Try choosing a bike ride instead of driving the next time you’re only travelling a short distance. Every ride is a step toward healthier bodies, stronger communities, and a safer, more bike-friendly Georgia.

Key Dates:

  • International Women’s Mountain Biking Day (May 3rd): International Women's Mountain Biking Day is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in May. This year, Women's MTB Day is on Saturday, May 3rd. It's a day for women riders to gather, experience, and share their stoke for mountain biking! Tag your rides with #WomensMTBDay!
  • National Ride a Bike Day (May 4th): Kick off the month with a ride! Whether it’s a quick spin around the neighborhood or a longer adventure, let’s celebrate the freedom and fun of biking. Bonus points if you make it Star Wars themed for “May the Fourth.”
  • Bike & Roll to School Day (May 7th): Get the whole family rolling! There’s no better way to start the school day than with fresh air and pedal strokes.
  • Bike to Work Week (May 12th-18th), Bike to Work Day (May 16th): Try a new way to get to and from work this week! Commuting by bike is a fantastic way to get exercise, reduce your carbon footprint, and start your day with a smile.
  • Ride of Silence (May 21): The ride of silence is a free ride that may be happening near you. This ride aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police, and city officials that cyclists have the legal right to ride safely on our public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured while riding. Check in with your local advocacy organization to find a ride of silence near you.
